What is Half Hourly Data?
Your electricity meter is continuously recording how much energy you are using. It would not be practical to use live data within the energy industry so instead it is aggregated into blocks of half hour usage. This level of detail is currently granular enough to accurately manage demand and generation throughout the energy grid.
If you don't have a smart meter, the usage between meter reads taken is estimated for each half hour of the period but with smart meters, your usage for every half an hour is recorded accurately and can be made available. However, there are restrictions on who can access this data - as this data belongs to you, you should be allowed to control who has access to it.
What we do with your Half Hourly Data
For many of the grid services available to us to save on your energy costs or to earn you money, we must have accurate data to participate. When we share this data with the industry, it is anonymised and usually aggregated with data from other customers so cannot be linked back to you.
How we access your Half Hourly Data
Even though we are not your energy supplier, we are able to access the half hourly data from your meter via an authorised third party. We choose to use n3rgy to provide this service. To gain access to your data through n3rgy, we must do two things. First, we must have your explicit consent to access your data and check every 2 years if you are happy to continue to grant us this access. Second, we must prove you have the authority to grant this consent.
Proving you have the authority to grant consent may be a little inconvenient to you, but this is to protect you and your data. There are two ways in which you can provide evidence to show that you reside in the property:
With a debit or credit card
If you are willing to provide your payment card details, we check the address your card is registered to matches the address we hold for you. We will not take any payment and we use a secure service for this, provided by Stripe who are trusted experts in financial processing.
With a recent utility or council tax bill
If you would prefer not to confirm your address with a payment card, or maybe the card is registered to a different address to that where our equipment is located, you can send us a utility bill (energy, telephone or water) dated within the last 3 months; or a council tax bill from this year. We will compare the property address on this document with that for which we hold for you. Please email the bill to consent@levelise.com. This process is manual so please give us a few days to complete our checks.
